The Northern Lights (or Southern Lights if you are in the S. Hemisphere) should be a priority in everyone's travels. I was lucky enough to catch them when I was backpacking on the Harding Ice Field in Alaska in 2001. I have also seen them from Northern Michigan a few times, but I can assure you, it's an entirely different ball game in AK.Not only were we able to see the vibrant green streaks of the aurora, this was mid August, which is when the annual Perseid Meteor Shower is at it's peak. Needless to say, this was unreal. The great thing about Alaska is that you don't have to backpack for two weeks in order to take advantage of its wonders - but I would recommend doing so...just bring your deet, bear spray and mosquito net:-)
